How an IAM Local Works

All IAM officers, from the Local Lodges, to the International President are nominated in open union meetings and elected through direct, secret-ballot votes of the membership.

Direct Elections
All Local Lodge officers are elected by you, from amongst yourselves! Your representatives are chosen by you in an open and transparent process. As workers at Toyota, you will all be in one Local Lodge, so you will all share common problems and will have resolutions beneficial to all.

Local Officers
The Local Executive Board consists of

Convention
Every four years, Local Lodge members elect representative to attend Grand Lodge Convention. Delegates to the Convention are the ultimate authority within the IAM – they debate and enact binding policy resolutions and amendments to the IAM Constitution – the set of rules, regulations and codes of behaviour for all members of the Union.

Members rights
The IAM Constitution guarantees every union member these rights:

The right to:

  • Membership regardless of sex, race or national origin.
  • Attend union meetings and to speak freely.
  • Nominate members for union office, in the local and international union.
  • Vote by secret ballot on nominees for union offices
  • Have a voice and vote on proposals for wage increases and improved working conditions that are negotiated with Management.
  • Speak out against any policy or candidate for union office without fear or interference.
  • Run for any union office.
  • A secret ballot vote on any strike action.
  • To receive strike benefits as outlined in the IAM constitution
  • To receive an accounting of all union finances from Local, District and international union
  • Be fully informed on union policy through official publications and circulars.
  • Propose changes to the IAM constitution
  • Elect local delegates to Conventions
